„Together, We Can Achieve More.“ | Rigoberta Menchú

Rigoberta Menchú, human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, accepted Sylvia Freygner’s invitation for a moderated discussion with Brigitte Handlos, ORF Chronicle Editor, during her visit to Vienna on the occasion of the United Nations International Day of Peace. The conversation centered on the topic: „On the Love of the Humiliated and the Hatred of the Unworthy. A Fight for the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.“

„There can be no development if a societal system is imposed on a people that they have not formulated themselves.“ | Rigoberta Menchú

Rigoberta Menchú spoke about her fight against human rights violations in Guatemala and how her work succeeded in drawing the world’s attention to the plight of her people. When asked how the Nobel Peace Prize has shaped her life, she responded clearly that it made her visible on the global stage and allowed her words to be heard. However, it also brought a great responsibility to advocate for indigenous peoples.

„It is possible to create new perspectives and leave the bad behind.“ | Rigoberta Menchú

Among the distinguished guests were Edgar Daniel Leal Matta, Consul of the Guatemalan Embassy, Envoy Willy Kempel, KR Doris Felber, Tatjana Oppitz (General Director of IBM), Andrea Kdolsky (former Federal Minister), and Robert Pfarrwaller (General Director of Philips Austria).
